US Olympic Female Team Qualifies For Quarter Finals

By Delords - Saturday, July 28, 2012

The U.S. women advanced to the Olympic quarterfinals after a 3-0 win over Colombia. Megan Rapinoe started the scoring in the first half, before Abby Wambach and Carli Lloyd put the game away in the second period.

Colombia offered a strong resistance for the first half hour, but the U.S. broke through thanks to Rapinoe, who curled a right-footed effort in from 20 yards out.

The Colombians should have been down to 10 players before the half when Lady Andrade got off a blatant punch to Wambach's face while running down the field. Cameras caught the incident, but luckily for Colombia, the referees did not.

The U.S. put the match beyond reach with just over 15 minutes to play, when Tobin Heath played Wambach through the Colombian back line, and the striker held off her defender to coolly slot past the onrushing goalkeeper.

Lloyd added the gloss just a few minutes later. Rapinoe slotted the midfielder through the middle of the Colombian defense, and Lloyd duly finished low and far post.

The U.S. will face North Korea on Tuesday in its final group stage match.
