Man arrested for carrying gun, knives into Westlake 'Dark Knight Rises' showing

By Delords - Wednesday, August 8, 2012

NORTH RIDGEVILLE, Ohio (AP) — Authorities say a Cleveland-area man has been arrested for carrying a gun, ammunition and several knives into a showing of the "The Dark Knight Returns."

Police in North Ridgeville say a manager was suspicious of the man and his satchel when he entered the theater for the 10 p.m. Saturday showing of the Batman movie.

Scott A. Smith, 37, of North Ridgeville was arrested without incident at the Regal Cinemas 16 at Crocker Park just after 10 p.m.

A theater employee noticed Smith carrying a backpack-type satchel. Westlake officer Jeremiah Bullins, who was off-duty but working security at the cinema then followed Smith into an empty theater and asked to search the bag.

Inside, Bullins discovered a loaded 9mm handgun and two magazines of ammunition, along with four knives.

The incident occurred prior to a 10 p.m. showing of 'The Dark Knight Rises,' the same film that was showing last month when a 24-year-old gunman opened fire in an Aurora, Colorado theater.

Police Lt. Ray Arcuri said Bullins should be commended for his actions and his observations, along with the theater manager.

"He (Bullins) did a great job. It was excactly what he should do in that situtation," Arcuri said. "He may have averted a tragedy by his actions."

Arcuri said Smith sat in a position of "tactical advantage" with his back to the wall at the top of the theater.

"What concerns us is where he was sitting in the theater. He was the first guy in there," Arcuri said. "If he chose to do something there, all his potential victims were in front of him and he had an advantage over them."

Police believe Smith, who has a wife and young daughter, spent a short time in the military. He does not have a permit to carry a concealed weapon. He does not have a criminal record, Arcuri said.

The Rate of Public Violence is really on the increase in the United State and the Government really need to device more ways of curbing such acts.
