Belgian Malinois Breaks Diving Dog World Record

By Delords - Thursday, October 11, 2012

In case you were wondering...yes, there are long jump competitions for dogs that carry high stakes--stakes like world records and world championships. But instead of running and jumping into a pit of sand like humans do, dogs jump into a pool of water--and their long jump competitions are called "diving dog" competitions.

It seems that the stakes were recently raised in the dog diving arena, as the world record was broken over the weekend at the 15th Annual Purina Pro Plan Incredible Dog Challenge National Finals in Gray Summit, Missouri. Vhoebe, a Belgian Malinois from San Diego, jumped a full 32 feet 3 inches--3 inches farther than the previous world record, held by a Whippet named Cochiti from Olympia, Washington.

Vhoebe's owner, Lisa Ann Strum, said in a release that Vhoebe has been training five to six times per week since 2009, which seems to have paid off, as this world record is the third she's owned in the past three years.

Vhoebe's record is a full 2 feet 7 1/2 inches farther than any human has ever jumped; American track and field star Mike Powell holds the long jump world record of 29 feet 4 1/2 inches, which he jumped in Tokyo in 1991.

In addition to dog diving contests, the Purina Pro Plan Incredible Dog Challenge puts on other athletic events such as small and large dog agility challenges, freestyle flying disc competitions, Jack Russell hurdle racing, and 30-weave pole racing.

You can watch Vhoebe's incredible leap in the video below, along with a few highlights from the freestyle flying disc competition, which is always a crowd favorite.
