Refrigerator-Sized Aircraft Part Crashes in Kent Neighborhood

Refrigerator-sized aircraft part crashes in Kent neighborhood

The US  Federal Aviation Administration is investigating after a piece of metal about the size of a refrigerator door fell from a jet aircraft and crashed into a residential neighborhood Friday morning on Kent's East Hill.

Residents in Kent are still perplexed over exactly where the landing door came from. Just moments before the door crashed into the neighborhood, people described what looked like a cargo jet flying unusually low. "It sounded like maybe a little distressed, or vibrating," Kent resident Diane Oien said.

Residents who live in the area said the errant aircraft part hit the ground just before 7 a.m. and skipped about 30 feet before coming to rest on the street, right next to sidewalks and the front yards of homes there.

According to witnesses, lots of people walk through the area each day, including children heading to school. But luckily no one was hit when the part came crashing down.
Initial assessments are that the piece that came down is part of a landing gear door, most likely from a cargo jet. Neighbors say a cargo jet flew low over the area at about the same time the part came down.

FAA officials currently are trying to identify which plane the part came from.
